Understanding Child Development in CYC Practice in the North

This course is an advanced study of child development theory with attention to Indigenous understandings of childhood, family and the formation of self-in-relationship. It is expected that the learner will have already engaged with child development theory and are familiar with the basic concepts. Application of theory to practice will focus on the major themes associated with the holistic development of children and youth. Of particular significance in this course are cultural teachings about gender identity and issues of development related to attachment, at-risk conditions, intergenerational trauma, residential schools and cultural genocide.
