Field Placement 1

This course offers students the opportunity to integrate theory into first year practice placement settings. Students will implement basic therapeutic engagement skills with children, and professional relationship skills with colleagues, within the team and relational contexts of Child and Youth Care practice. More specifically, students are required to demonstrate their ability to; self reflect, take initiative, ensure safety, follow organizational policies and procedures, and demonstrate an emerging understanding of their CYC role, within their unique practice context. Students are also responsible for designing a dynamic professional development plan, which identifies strengths and areas requiring attention, as it relates to the six domains of CYC practice. Students’ learning is supported through a life space supervision process including placement seminar. Three days per week, students are required to follow the schedule of their individual agencies, and cultural components of Indigenous placement organizations. An unsuccessful first semester, places students at high risk in terms of proceeding to placement.
