Indigenous Northern Perspective in CYC

Child and Youth Care (CYC) practice in Northwestern Ontario has unique dynamics Using a CYC practice framework, this course will examine the is-sues facing Indigenous children and families. Learners will be introduced to the historical reality of colonialism with particular attention to its impacts and legacy within the systems that have been created to support the development of Indigenous children. Racism at the personal, systemic and structural levels will be explored and related to concepts of identity formation and wellness. The topics of privilege, oppression, marginalization, and social location will be considered. Ultimately, learners are encouraged to appreciate and understand the need for social justice in relational CYC practice in Northwestern Ontario.
