Sociology of Family

This course will examine social, economic and cultural diversity of families, while discussing family systems, attachment patterns and parenting styles. Particular attention will be paid to the impact of assimilation, discrimination and intergenerational trauma on indigenous children and families in Northwestern Ontario and how to apply this understanding in practice. Child and Youth Care students will navigate processes of learning and personal awareness experiences in order to encourage a greater understanding of one's own family, how it may impact practice and encourage an understanding and respect for other Canadian families.
