Trauma Informed Care

In this course students explore trauma-informed care at the individual, organizational, and systemic levels. Students will develop an understanding of the diverse needs of trauma survivors from a culturally sensitive framework and will learn how to identify the various traumatic responses. The effect of trauma on the brain and functioning will be studied and effective ways to respond and to encourage healing will be discussed. The prevalence of complex trauma in a variety of populations seeking treatment for serious and enduring mental illness, substance abuse, and other concerns will be explored. The effects of working with trauma survivors on the helper will also be discussed.
