How You Can Help On Campus

There are many ways to engage with sustainability at Confederation College and in your day-to-day life. Check out these tips to see some ways you can make a difference!

Recycle

A large institution like Confederation College can generate a lot of waste if we’re not careful. With your help in recycling all plastics numbered 1-7, glass, aluminum, and paper products we can divert waste from landfill! (SDG 12 – Responsible Production and Consumption)

Think Reusable

When packing lunches or snacks, use reusable containers that you can take home and wash instead of single-use containers. Further, drop off office supplies or other items you no longer need at the Free Stuff Station outside the Library on the second floor for others to use. Also, keep an eye out for events like Trash to Treasure Day and the Clothing Giveaway to get rid of gently used items you no longer want and to find something for yourself! If you don’t make it to the clothing giveaway, and you have any sort of textiles (clothes, gently used shoes, handbags or stuffed animals) you no longer need, you can donate them at any time to our Sic Sox Circular textile recycling bin on campus (located by the McIntyre Building in Parking Lot M).

Reduce and Refill

Located on Lake Superior, Thunder Bay has some of the cleanest tap water in the world. Take advantage of this by using a reusable water bottle and the many refilling stations on campus. In doing so, you’ll be reducing waste, AND saving yourself money! (SDG 12 – Responsible Production and Consumption)

Butt Out

Use the cigarette butt disposal receptacles conveniently located in the designated smoking areas on campus. In addition to keeping our campus beautiful, cigarette butts get carried into our sewers when it rains which can contaminate our water and be harmful to aquatic life. (SDG 15 – Life on Land)

Rethink Transportation

When it comes to getting around Thunder Bay, you have a number of options (have “a number of options” link to “how to Get Around Town” page). (SDG 11 – Sustainable Communities)

  • Make use of your UPass and enjoy unlimited access to Thunder Bay’s bus system.
  • Make use of Thunder Bay's multi-use cycling and walking trail system. Use The Bike Locker to secure your bike when you are on campus.
  • If you have to drive, try to carpool with friends or classmates and avoid idling.

Set an Example

lead by example and make sustainable practices part of your normal routine. Don’t be afraid to talk to your friends, family and colleagues about sustainability and why you’re doing what you’re doing. It might seem intimidating sometimes, but these discussions are incredibly valuable for creating change in your community. (All SDGs)

Get Involved!

We host numerous events and activities throughout the year to help students engage with sustainability and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Better yet, take it a step further and join or start a club! Alternately, plan a sustainable action that you’re interested in. If you need support with starting a club, check out the SUCCI club page here. If you have questions or may benefit from support in planning an action, reach out to us at [email protected]. (All SDGs)
