Student Advisement

  • PLAR can affect OSAP if it reduces course load below a certain level.
  • PLAR can affect program completion.
  • All prerequisites must be completed before a course can be challenged. .
  • The fee for PLAR is available here under 'Other Fees'.
  • Transcripts will not record unsuccessful PLAR attempts as failures. Options for unsuccessful students are registering in the course, repeating the PLAR process after one calendar year or appealing the outcome through the Academic Dispute Resolution process.
  • Students who register for PLAR must complete the process within the semester commenced, or within the timeframe specified by the Faculty Assessor.
  • Students currently enrolled in a course who wish to challenge it through PLAR must demonstrate they acquired the knowledge, skills and attitudes to meet the learning outcomes through work and/or life experience prior to enrollment.
  • Credits gained through PLAR are awarded and transcribed in the same manner as credits earned through coursework at the College.
  • A candidate is not eligible to initiate the PLAR process for courses audited in the last ten (10) months, or a subject that the candidate previously failed without permission from the Program Coordinator and Dean.
  • Candidates must demonstrate that they have gained the requisite knowledge, skills and attitudes through non-post secondary experiences in order to use the PLAR process. Students should review the course outline prior to consulting with faculty.
  • Students must speak to the Associate Dean and have the PLAR application form signed for approval prior to submission.
