What do you need to know about fire drills as a faculty member at the Thunder Bay Campus?

Fire drills are critical learning opportunities, during which your students will look to you for direction.

You need to be prepared:

  • Review the floor plans posted on each floor of your building.
  • Check the “We Share the Space” posters in all classrooms for the location of the two exits nearest your classroom.
  • Know the primary and alternate evacuation routes from each classroom, lab or shop in which you will be teaching.
  • Identify your emergency meeting location: a safe outdoor spot well away from the building (identified in the Fire Safety Instructions ) where you and your students will gather.
  • Review the 2017 / 2018 Fire Safety Instructions
  • At the beginning of each semester, advise your students that fire drills will be held, and that all members of the College community are expected to participate.
  • Review the drill routine with your students.

During a fire drill:

  • When the fire alarm sounds, calmly proceed to the nearest exit, directing your students to follow you.
  • Close, but do not lock doors.
  • Use the stairs:  do not use the elevator.
  • Follow the instructions of fire wardens, Security Guards and emergency personnel.
  • Quickly move away from the building, but do not run or crowd.
  • Move to your emergency meeting location.
  • If weather is inclement, move to the nearest safe building.
  • Do not re-enter the building until notified in person by emergency personnel that it is safe to do so.
