The course hours presented above are auto generated, based on the assumption of a standard 7-1-7 semester. Note that the second semester is 16 weeks of academic study and an additional 2 weeks of field placement. The subjects with the exception of CS030 Communications Courses are delivered in a modular format. You will get all of HC121, Applied Work Practices in the first 5 weeks, followed by all of the HC122, Engines in the next 5 weeks and then all of the HC123, Electrical Systems in the last 4 weeks of the first semester. The corrected hours for the following courses are:

CS 030	Communications for the Trades	3	Expand In this course, students will develop the fundamental technical, business, and oral communication skills required of employees in the trades. Field-related resources are used in assignments to give you the necessary practice to improve your skills and familiarize you with typical workplace requirements. The course emphasizes adapting communication to the needs of the intended audience, selecting the appropriate strategies, and using effective communication style. Upon completion of this course, you will be more adept at analyzing real-world writing scenarios; writing clearly and concisely; developing clear explanations and arguments; writing effective sentences; and speaking professionally.
HC 121	Applied Work Pract & Procedure	7	Expand This course introduces the student to occupational health and safety, basic hand and power tools, precision measuring tools, fastening devices and torquing procedures. Heating and cutting methods are also introduced.
HC 122	Engines & Ancillary Systems	7	Expand This course introduces the student to the design, construction, diagnosis, disassembly and reassembly of gasoline and diesel engines and sub-systems.
HC 123	Electricity and Electronics I	6	Expand This course introduces the student to the principles of electricity and electronics as they apply to the Motive Power Trade. Electrical laws, circuits, circuit calculations, test equipment and their application are covered.

HC 241	Electrical & Electronics II	5	Expand This course reviews basic electrical/electronic principles and concepts. Starting and charging system principles, operation, testing and diagnosis are covered.
HC 242	Heavy Duty Fuel Systems	5	Expand This course introduces basic diesel fuel system concepts including pump-line-nozzle, distributor pumps, pressure time, mechanical unit injectors, electronic unit injection and high pressure common rail systems. Governor concepts are introduced as well as electronic engine controls and diagnostic tooling.

HC 245	Field Placement	6	Expand Students are placed for a two week period in selected industry throughout the Northwestern Ontario region and are expected to satisfactorily perform basic functions under the supervision of industry personnel. Performance evaluations will be conducted by both industry supervisors and college staff. It is important for students to practice their newly acquired skills in an actual work environment. It is an opportunity for the students to sell themselves to the industry. Industry can use this Field Placement as a tool to 'try before you buy.' This allows the employer to be aware of the new tradesperson's skills, attitude and work habits before a commitment is made for employment.
