Academic Advisement (Counselling Services)

Academic advisement involves helping students to be more successful in school.

Academic advisement begins with helping students to select specific courses and programs and to develop plans to help a student achieve their potential in school.

Academic Assessment Tools

Our counsellors use a variety of tools to help students explore their skill, personality and aptitude. Ultimately we are looking to help students choose an academic program that fits them and set them on a career direction that makes sense. The counselling department uses the following academic assessment tools:

  1. Learning and Study Strategies Inventory (LASSI) — This inventory is the most widely used assessment of its kind in higher education which accurately diagnoses the ten factors most directly related to academic success.
  2. Mature Student Test — A test for individuals who have been out of school for at least 2 years and wish to determine if they have the requisite English and Math skills to directly enter post-secondary work at the College.

In addition, we can also help students in the following areas:

  1. Study skills
  2. Time management
  3. Stress management
  4. Test preparation
  5. Essay preparation
  6. Note taking
  7. Learning styles
  8. Tutoring
