Disruptive, Threatening & Potentially Violent Behaviours (SAFE Campus)

Rude, Disruptive or Abusive Behaviours.

Respond to a negative (eg. rude, disruptive, abusive, etc.) verbal interaction as follows:

  • Interrupt the conversation firmly, but politely.
  • Tell the person that you do not like the tone of the conversation and that you will end the conversation, if necessary.
  • If the behaviour persists, end the conversation, and refer the person to an available supervisor or manager, or arrange for a follow-up call or appointment with a supervisor or manager.
  • If the behaviour persists, ask the person to leave the room or office. If the person will not leave, leave yourself. Call 922 for urgent and immediate assistance.
  • Document and report the incident:
    • employees report to their supervisors or managers
    • students report through the Student Success Centre; students in Residence report through the Residence Manager for incidents occuring at Residence

Threatening or Potentially Violent Behaviours.

When dealing with an individual who is using threatening behaviour or / or language, and / or exhibiting signs of potentially violent behaviour:

  • Remain calm.  Give the person space.  Speak in a calm, non-threatening manner.
  • If the behaviour persists or intensifies, end the conversation.
  • If appropriate, refer the person to an available supervisor, manager or coordinator,
  • If you are on your own, ask the person to leave the room or office.  If the person will not leave, leave yourself.  Call 922 for urgent and immediate assistance.

  • If the behaviour at any time becomes extreme or escalates rapidly, call 922 for urgent and immediate assistance.

  • Document and report the incident:

  • employees report to their supervisors or managers
  • students report through the Student Success Centre; students in Residence report through the Residence Manager for incidents occuring at Residence

HOT TIPS:

  • In dealing with persistent disruptive behaviour in a group setting, adjourn briefly and get assistance from an available supervisor or coordinator. Document the incident and report it to your supervisor or manager.
  • In dealing with threatening or potentially violent behaviour in a group setting, adjourn briefly and get urgent and immediate assistance by calling Campus Security at 922.  Follow-up with your supervisor or manager.  Document the incident and report it to your supervisor or manager.
  • If you are anticipating a situation which may become violent (such as a meeting with a particular individual), plan the meeting in advance using “Meeting with Potentially Aggressive Individuals” checklist on the Public Safety section of the college website:  www.confederationcollege.ca/publicsafety.  Always evaluate the need for an in-person meeting with your supervisor or manager.
    • Contact Security in advance of such a meeting. Security can be requested to remain in the vicinity of the meeting location.
    • Several meeting rooms on campus are equipped with wireless alarms that can be worn as a pendant or as a wrist band.
