2019 Northwestern Ontario Aboriginal Youth Achievement & Recognition Awards

The Northwestern Ontario Aboriginal Youth Achievement and Recognition Awards was formally known as The Niigaantige Career Fair. It began in 1987 when a need was identified to address the high attrition rates among Aboriginal students studying at the secondary and post secondary levels.

This year marks their 15th anniversary and took place on May 1 at the Italian Cultural Centre with a total of 12 categories such as Academic, Community Leadership and Peer Mentorship. Confederation College students were nominated by Apiwin staff with support from program coordinators. Four Confederation College students were selected as 2019 recipients.

  • Personal Achievement Award: Rebecca Sugarhead - Dental Assisting                     
  • Advocacy & Activism Award: Stephanie Quisess - Native Child and Family Services 
  • Advocacy & Activism Award: Tyarra Goodman - Native Child and Family Services                                                        
  • Sandra Kakeeway Cultural Award: Andrew Kejick - Native Child and Family Services   

With over 300 people in attendance, it was a great night full of inspiring stories, congratulations to all the winners and their families!
