Emergencies

In the case of an emergency please call 922 (Campus Response).

Allergy Injections

If you require allergy injections, you must make an appointment to see an N.P. prior to administration of your first injection at the Health Centre; this follows for each and every year. If you are receiving allergy injections, you will be required to wait for a minimum of 20 minutes after you receive your allergy injection. If you require allergy testing, you must book an appointment in order to receive a referral to an allergy specialist or you can call the specialist (Dr. B. Sweet) directly for an appointment at (807) 345-7555.

Aviation Medicals

A qualified aviation medical doctor (Dr. Trusdale) is available to perform aviation medicals. Medical examinations requested by 3rd parties like insurance companies, schools, and places of employment are no longer covered by OHIP. These services will be charged to the patient and the costs are as follows:

  • $80.00 - Aviation Medicals
  • $80.00 - Ministry of Transport
  • $60.00 - Student or 3rd Party Physical
  • $65.00 - Other

Depo-Provera Injections

Depo-Provera is a method of birth control in which hormonal injections are given every 12 weeks. More information is available at the Health Centre.

If you feel that Depo-Provera maybe the best method of birth control for you, please make an appointment with our N.P. to discuss your options.

For Depo-Provera Injections:

  • Obtain a prescription from a physician or N.P.
  • Get the prescription filled at the pharmacy of your choice
  • Return to the Health Centre with your medication for administration
  • Book a follow up appointment with the N.P. prior to your second injection

Clients receiving Depo-Provera injections, will be required to wait for a minimum of 20 minutes after they receive the injection.

NOTE: Depo-Provera injections will not protect you against any sexual transmitted diseases (STD’s). If you would like more information regarding Depo-Provera injections, please feel free to drop by the Health Centre for an information pamphlet.

Health Education

Education will be provided on a variety of topics including:

  • Nutrition
  • Cholesterol
  • Birth control & pregnancy
  • Sexuality
  • Sexually transmitted diseases
  • Blood pressure
  • Stress management
  • Others

Health promotional events will be scheduled during various times of the year. Pamphlets, literature, and videos are available on a wide variety of health topics for individual or classroom use.

Hepatitis B Immunizations

If you are requesting or requiring Hepatitis B immunization, you must book an appointment to see a physician/N.P. prior to administration. An N.P. must be in the clinic at the time of administration.

Hepatitis B immunizations are partially covered under the student plan. You can drop by or call the Health Centre at (807) 475-6169 for more information.

For Hepatitis B Injections:

  • Obtain a prescription from the N.P.
  • Get the prescription filled at a pharmacy of your choice
  • Bring it back to the Health Centre for administration.

Hepatitis B immunizations are a vaccine series of 3 injections:

  1. The first injection will be administered during the first Hepatitis B immunization visit
  2. The second injection will be administered 1 month after the first injection
  3. The third injection will be administered 5 months after the second injection

Clients receiving Hepatitis B injections are required to wait for a minimum of 20 minutes receiving an injection. 

NOTE: It is recommended that post Hepatitis B immunization blood work be done within 6 months after your vaccine series in order to determine if you have adequate protection against Hepatitis B.

Medical Examination Requested by 3rd Parties

Medical examinations requested by third parties (i.e. Insurance companies, schools, and places of employment) are no longer covered by OHIP. The cost of these services will be charged to the patient.

  • Ministry of Transport Physical $80.00
  • Student/3rd Party Physical $60.00
  • Others $65.00

Medical Notes

The N.P. can issue a note in situations due to illness or injury resulting in significant time loss, which will disrupt academic or practical work. The student or staff member must see the N.P. at time of illness, or injury.

N.P. Clinics

An N.P. will be available at various times throughout the day and week for appointments as required by students and staff. Appointments are preferred. However, depending on bookings, appointments can sometimes be made the same day.

Referrals

Students or staff requiring a referral to a specialist will need to make an appointment to discuss their needs with the N.P.

Registered Massage Therapy

Heather Dilley, RMT, will be available at the College Health Centre offering half hour and one hour appointments. Appointments can be booked by calling (807) 475-6169. Staff are covered for these services through Sunlife and college students are covered 80% through their student health plan (depending on the student’s flex plan selection).

Staff and Faculty Health Services

Staff and faculty are required to pay an annual $50 user fee for services provided by the Health Centre. This fee covers the following services:

  • On-site N.P. appointments
  • Minor first aid
  • Health counseling
  • Blood pressure monitoring
  • Request for transfer of health records

NOTE: This does not pertain to physician services covered by your medical insurance.

TB Skin Testing and Documentation

TB skin testing will be provided by booking an appointment with our N.P. A fee will be charged for each skin test performed. The fee is due at the time of booking. Students are required to return 2 days after their TB skin test to have it read by an N.P.or Nurse.

The college policy requires students in the following listed programs to have a TB skin test within 6 months of admission to their program:

  • Aboriginal Community Advocacy
  • Child and Youth Worker
  • Dental Assisting
  • Dental Hygiene
  • Developmental Services Worker
  • Early Childhood Education 
  • Medical Radiation Technology
  • Medical Laboratory Assistant/Technician
  • Practical Nursing
  • Recreation Therapy Program Year 2
  • Social Service Worker Year 2
  • Educational Support
  • Paramedic
  • Extension Health Programs
  • Personal Support Worker
