My Educational Background

My education is in biology, with a minor in chemistry.  I did my undergrad and Masters at Lakehead University.  I was lucky enough to work with the Ministry of Natural resources for my Masters.  I studied how forestry practice affects the benthic invertebrate community (bugs!) in streams.  Working in streams is lovely by the way!

How I Became a Teacher

Teaching is actually my second career.  Right after I graduated, I did research for forestry companies and tree seedling growers.  I did this for six years. Then, the forest industry took a downturn and I decide to make a career change. I had always enjoyed being a Teaching Assistant and working with students on their Honours and Masters theses, so I decided to try teaching. I went to LU again to get my education degree and I am so glad I did!  It was scary going back to school, but everyone was very welcoming and did not care how old I was.

My first teaching experience was in Wunnumin Lake First Nation.  I taught high school biology and math.  It was fantastic and I am so grateful to the people of Wunnumin Lake for welcoming me.  Right after that, I came to work at Confederation College in the Academic Upgrading and Pre-health Programs and have been here ever since.

It turns out that I was right; I do love teaching!  I think it is because so many things fascinate me. I love learning; digging deep, asking questions, and figuring things out.  Academic Upgrading is a great fit for me because I am more concerned about understanding things than “proper” behavior.  This program is flexible and supportive but challenges you intellectually.  Academic Upgrading recognizes that life can sometimes get in the way and does not penalize students for that.  This fits with my belief that everyone is doing their best and sometimes needs a helping hand.  I will always do everything I can to help you reach your goals.

My Advice to Students

The advice I give to students is to be curious, do not be afraid to make mistakes, and do not compare yourself to others. In fact, make as many mistakes as possible because that is where the real learning happens!  If you feel like you do not belong in school, remember, almost everyone feels like an imposter at first even if they do not show it. I look forward to working with you!  You are making a great choice if you come to Academic Upgrading!
